Description
Porta all'Arco is one of the oldest monuments in Voltera, dating back to the 4th-3rd century BC. This Etruscan gate is the only surviving element of the southern section of the ancient city walls.
Its characteristic elements are the three mysterious heads adorning the arch, probably representing the Etruscan gods: Jupiter, Juno and Minerva, who guard the city.
During World War II, residents saved the gate from destruction by building a protective structure around it in just 24 hours. It is a fascinating witness to history that has survived for thousands of years and continues to delight in its mystery.
