Description
Kögunarhóll is a small tuff hill in southern Iceland, shrouded in legend about the burial of a Viking ship. According to local tradition, it houses the ship of Ingólfur Arnarson, Iceland's first permanent settler, who founded Reykjavík around 874.
The name of the hill comes from the word 'knarr' - a type of Viking ship, which directly refers to maritime burial customs. Although there is no archaeological evidence, the place fascinates as a living example of Icelandic sagas and Nordic boat burial culture.
