Description
Killeavy Old Churches is a fascinating historical monument dating back to the 5th century, founded by St. Moninna as one of the most important monasteries for nuns in medieval Ireland.
The site consists of two churches set one behind the other - the 11th century western church and the 15th century eastern church. The western church is characterized by a massive lintel, while the eastern church features an ornate window with carvings of angels.
The grounds also include a large tree-lined cemetery, still in use, where a granite slab reportedly marks the grave of St. Moninna. Higher up on the hill is a holy spring, visited by pilgrims on her feast day, July 6.
