Description
Ancient Tanneries is a fascinating historical monument dating back to the 13th century that played a key role in the economy of Saint-Antonin-Noble-Val.
During its heyday in the 18th century, some 40 tanneries operated here, producing some 200,000 calfskins annually. The tanning industry benefited from water from the Bessarel Canal, essential to the leather processing process.
The last tannery closed in 1925, and a disastrous flood in 1930 finally destroyed the tannery district, ending an era of the craft in the town.
