Description
Hill o' Many Stanes is a fascinating Bronze Age monument, some 4,000 years old. This unusual arrangement of more than 200 stones, arranged in 22 rows to form a fan shape, is one of Scotland's most mysterious attractions.
Archaeologists speculate that the site may have served as a prehistoric lunar observatory, tracking the movement of the moon over an 18.6-year cycle. No other similar arrangement of stones has been found outside the Caithness and Sutherland regions of the UK.
When visiting, it's a good idea to stick to the perimeter path to fully appreciate the pattern of the stone arrangement from different perspectives. On sunny days you can admire the Banffshire hills on the other side of the Moray Firth bay.
