Description
Altes Schloss is a medieval fortress built by Emperor Charles IV in 1356, picturesquely located on an island in the Pegnitz River.
The castle impresses with its unique Hall of Coats of Arms, where 112 coats of arms of the nobility of the Czech Crown were carved and painted on the stone walls - one of the most valuable collections of medieval heraldry in Europe.
A wooden covered bridge connecting the castle to the town adds to the site's unique charm. After extensive restoration (1985-2013), the castle has retained its medieval character and is part of the historic 'Golden Route' connecting Nuremberg and Prague.
