Description
Forteresse de Penne is an impressive 13th century fortress, a jewel of military architecture located in the heart of the Gorges de l'Aveyron gorges.
Built by Alphonse de Poitiers, brother of King Louis IX, on the foundations of an earlier fortification, it has witnessed a turbulent history, including the Crusades against the Cathars.
Today, despite its partial destruction during the religious wars, the fortress impresses with its monumental gate with rifle holes, courtyard and high tower offering breathtaking views of the surrounding area. Ongoing restoration work since 2007 allows visitors to watch stonemasons in period costumes at work.
