Description
Saint-Paul de Mausole is a unique monastery with a history dating back to the year 1000, which gained worldwide fame as the place where Vincent van Gogh stayed from 1889 to 1890. It was here, surrounded by the tranquility and beauty of the Provençal countryside, that the artist created many of his most famous works.
The stunning Romanesque cloister with its four vaulted galleries is an architectural gem of the site. Originally, the monastery served as an asylum for the mentally ill, and after the French Revolution it was transformed into a spa.
The place has a peacefulness and atmosphere that inspired not only van Gogh, but also Albert Schweitzer, who stayed here from 1914 to 1918.
