Description

Abbaye de Montmajour is a fortified Benedictine monastery that delights lovers of history and architecture. Built between the 10th and 18th centuries on a rocky hill near Arles, it combines Romanesque, Gothic and Neoclassical styles.

This unique site originally served as a necropolis and later became an important pilgrimage site in the Middle Ages. Visitors can admire the semi-tropical chapel, the underground crypt and the massive, unfinished church.

The abbey was listed as a historic site in 1840 and is a great place for those seeking spiritual reflection and a fascinating journey through eight centuries of architectural evolution.
