Independence Park

Independence Park is the historic heart of Santo Domingo, where Dominican independence was born.

The centerpiece of the park is the Altar de la Patria, a mausoleum that hides the remains of the Dominican Republic's founding fathers: Juan Pablo Duarte, Francisco del Rosario Sánchez and Ramón Matías Mella.

The space is filled with numerous monuments and plaques commemorating key events in the nation's history, creating an outdoor history lesson of sorts. A green oasis amidst the hustle and bustle of the city, it offers shady alleys where one can often find local vendors with authentic souvenirs and snacks.
