Description

St. John's Cathedral is an architectural gem in the heart of Nicosia, combining Franco-Byzantine and Baroque styles. This 14th century temple, rebuilt in the 17th century, impresses with its rich interior decorations, gold details and impressive chandeliers.

The wooden carvings represent the finest examples of 18th-century Cypriot craftsmanship, and the four large icons were created by a Cretan master. The interior is also decorated with stunning frescoes depicting biblical scenes.

Since 1720, the cathedral has served as the residence of the Archbishop of Cyprus, and enthronements of successive hierarchs have been held there.
