Description
Forty Columns Fortress is a 7th century medieval fortress that protected the port and city of Nea Paphos from Arab invasions. The name comes from the numerous granite columns found in the former agora (marketplace).
This imposing structure is notable for its three-meter-thick walls, four massive corner towers and a moat with a wooden bridge. Unfortunately, in 1222 an earthquake destroyed the fortress, which was subsequently abandoned.
Today, you can admire the extensive ruins and remnants of the former power as you stroll among the historic stones against the backdrop of the picturesque Paphos Port.
