Description
The Presidential Palace in Nicosia is a fascinating monument with a rich history. Originally built in 1878 as a prefabricated structure, it combines elements of Byzantine, Gothic and Ottoman architecture. The building is decorated with a British coat of arms and four gargoyles with human heads representing those involved in its construction.
The palace was destroyed during the 1974 coup, and was later rebuilt with Greek financial support. Surrounded by a pine forest, it is an important point on the cultural map of Cyprus, offering a unique glimpse into the island's colonial past and its path to independence.
