Description
The Gion Kōbu Kaburenjō is the largest wooden theater in Japan, operating continuously since 1913. Recognized as a national cultural heritage site, this historic building is the heart of Japan's traditional performing arts, especially those associated with geisha and maiko (geisha disciples).
It is best known for Miyako Odori (Miyako Dance), a spring dance performance held since 1872. The adjacent Gion Corner theater features a condensed program of seven traditional Japanese arts, including Kyomai dance, tea ceremony and ikebana.
