Description
Greyfriars Kirkyard Cemetery Edinburgh is one of the oldest cemeteries in Edinburgh, established in 1562.
It is a place full of fascinating history, where you can admire a variety of architectural styles of gravestones from the 17th and 18th centuries. The cemetery is famous for its macabre tales of body snatchers and the Covenanters prison, where more than 1,200 prisoners were held.
Harry Potter fans will find tombstones here that inspired J.K. Rowling to create some of the characters. The site is also famous for paranormal activity, particularly around the Mackenzie Mausoleum, known as the 'Black Mausoleum'.
