Description
African Burial Ground National Monument is a unique memorial dedicated to the more than 15,000 Africans and African-Americans who lived and worked in colonial New York.
This historic cemetery is one of the oldest and largest discovered burial sites of enslaved and free Africans in North America. During the excavation, 419 skeletons were found, some with personal items like a silver pendant or filed teeth - elements of African cultural rituals.
The memorial consists of seven elements, including an Ancestral Chamber symbolizing the Middle Passage and a spiral wall with 20 religious symbols inspired by the African Diaspora.
