Description
The Queen's Staircase is a monumental 65-step staircase carved into solid limestone by 600 enslaved workers between 1793 and 1794. It connects Fort Fincastle with the center of Nassau, rising 31 meters among lush tropical grottoes with cascading waterfalls and palm trees.
Named after Queen Victoria, who abolished slavery in 1837, they are a symbol of emancipation. Hand-carved with basic tools, they create a romantic oasis of coolness with a pool at the base and high stone walls.
