Description
Ayioi Theodhoroi Island is a picturesque island located off the coast of Crete and is a nature reserve for the endangered kri-kri goats.
The island has a fascinating history - it has been a sacred place since Minoan times, and in 1574 the Venetians built a massive fortress here.
According to local legend, the island was created when a monster and its child were turned to stone thanks to prayers to Saint Marina and Saint George.
From a distance, the island resembles an open-mouthed monster thanks to a large arched cave in the southern part. Although access is limited, once a year (June 8) you can attend a festival in honor of Saint Theodore.
