Description
Whitmore Square (Iparrityi) is a historic park in the heart of Adelaide, designed in 1837 by Colonel Light. Distinctive paths in a Union Jack pattern and majestic Moreton Bay fig trees create a charming recreation area.
The park offers numerous recreational activities: a basketball court, ping-pong tables and a giant chess set. Note the 'Voyagers' art installation commemorating the Afghan camel chasers of the 1860s.
The park's name honors both William Whitmore, a British politician, and Iparrityi, the last person of the Kaurna tribe to speak their language.
